Aim: To look at how fossil fuels are contributing to climate change and how we can prevent this.

Definition of Fossil Fuels:
Fossil fuels have three department which are coal, oil and natural gas. Fossil fuels are departed underground and in oceans. Fossil fuels are solids, liquids and gases.

Scientific Terms for Students
  • Coal: a dark-brown to black solid substance formed naturally from the compaction and hardening of fossilized plants and used as a fuel primarily for electricity generation
  • Natural gas: a mixture of hydrocarbon gases that occurs naturally beneath the earth’s surface and is used as a fuel primarily for cooking and heating homes
  • Renewable resource: a resource that is never used up (e.g., solar energy)
  • Non-renewable resource: a resource that is not replaceable after its use (e.g., coal, gas)

Examples of Fossil Fuels:
  1. Coal
  2. Oil
  3. Natural Gas

  Activity:

In groups of 3 you will learn about different fossil fuels and the way they are mined?
Each group will be given a fossil fuel. The recorder will write down some of the important points. The reporter will read it to the group.
Person 1: Recorder: to write down 5 points of interest from the text.

  1. 5 Points:
  2. Positives and negatives of your type of mining.

Person 2: Reporter: to read back to the class their 5 points of interest.
Person 3: Collector: Gathers the required stationary from the teacher.

Mining Fossil Fuels
What Fossil Fuels are mined?
How are they mined?

1.Coal miners use giant machines to remove coal from the ground. The remove coal there is two methods, surface and underground. Some underground coal mines are 1,000 feet deep.
2.Oil miners normally start by drilling a well into an underground reservoir. When an oil well has been tapped, a geologist (Known on the rig as the "mud logger") will note it's presence.
3.Natural gases are mined the same way as oil is. First a large piece of drilling equipment is used to drill through the soil and rocks to reach the natural gas deposit. This makes most deep gas more expensive on the market due to the extra work needed to gain access to the deposit.
4.Mining solid fossil fuels, such as coal, by digging, scarping and exposing buried resources. Drilling methods extract liquid and gaseous fossil fuels that can be forced to flow to the surface, such as ordinary oil and natural gas.

Where are they mined?

1.Earth's crust
2.Surface
3.Underground

    Activity:
On the sheet provided you need to make two drawings of your cookie.

    Material:
    1.Paper
    2.Pencil/Rubber
    3.Cookies
    4.Toothpick
    5.Plate

    Steps:
1.First we got into pairs with somebody who we worked well with. My pair was Addyson who is my best friend.
2.As a pair we got a piece of paper each, I drew a cookie in one box then drew a habitat in the other box. After that we answered some questions to do with our habitat we choose.
3.After drawing and answering the questions we used a toothpick to pick the chocolate chips out so that you had a plain cookie.
4.Then once we finished that we draw the cookie again in one box and the habitat again in the other box. We drew what the cookie looked like once there was no chocolate chips left, and what the habitat looked like if we had done it there instead.
5.Then posted the information on our blogs.

Once you have drawn your cookies you must take 2 pictures and upload them to your blog.
Before mining the cookie and habitat: Drawings

After mining the cookie and habitat: Drawings

Findings: What did you find out as a result of your mining?
That the cookie was normal then turned different after picking out the chocolate chips. The cookie changed in taste as well once picking out the chocolate chips. The habitat was a beautiful place the go to until one day mining happened there are the habitat complete changed. The habitat changed by the look and by the living habitat there as well.

    Conclusion:
Today I learnt that more about the three departments of fossil fuels which are coal, oil and natural gases. I would like to learning more about the three departments mapping around the world. I liked today's lesson but especially liked mining a cookie and a habitat.
