Aim: To learn about a saturated solution and how to make crystals.
Definition of solution:
A liquid mixture, when something is dissolved into a liquid.
(Eg; Sugar, salt and borax and water.)
Definition of saturated:
Having or holding as much as can be absorbed of something.
(when no more sugar, salt and borax can be dissolved into the water)
Borax's Crystals
Materials
1: Plastic cup
2: Plastic spoon
3: 3 pipe cleaners
4: 1 Peg
5: 1/2 cup of warm water
6: 4 table spoons of borax
Process
Step 1: As a group we went up to the teachers are got 3 pipe cleaner, a peg, a cup with warm water and borax. We also got a plastic spoon to mix's the ingredients together.
Step 2: My teammate twisted the 3 pipe cleaners into a star, then put a peg on one color.
Step 3: Then we all had a turn mixing the borax's into the warm water, and making shaw it was saturated.
Step 4: After mixing the ingredients together I got a piece of paper and write our names and the types of crystals.
Step 5: Then we put the plastic cup with the ingredients on the paper, and we then put it on a red tray.
Sugar Crystals
Materials
1: Plastic cup
2: Plastic spoon
3: 1 pipe cleaner
4: 1 peg
5: 1/2 cup of warm water
6: 7 tablespoons of sugar
Process
Step 1: As a group we went up to the teachers are got 1 pipe cleaner, a peg, a cup with warm water and sugar. We also got a plastic spoon to mixed the ingredients together.
Step 2: Then we all had a turn mixing the sugar into the warm water, and making shaw it was saturated.
Step 3: After mixing the ingredients together, we wrote sugar crystals on the plastic cup.
Step 4: Then we put the plastic cup with the ingredients on the paper, and we then put it on a red tray.
Salt Crystals
Materials
1: Plastic cup
2: Plastic spoon
3: 1 pipe cleaner
4: 1 Peg
5: 1/2 cup of warm water
6: 4 tablespoons of salt
Process
Step 1: As a group we went up to the teachers are got 1 pipe cleaner, a peg, a cup with warm water and salt. We also got a plastic spoon to mixed the ingredients together.
Step 2: Then we all had a turn mixing the salt into the warm water, and making sure it was saturated.
Step 3: After mixing the ingredients together, we wrote salt crystals on the plastic cup.
Step 4: Then we put the plastic cup with the ingredients on the paper, and we then put it on a red tray.
Findings
Crystal Type | Shape (Describe the shape) | Size (of individual crystals) | Hardness (Crumbly to Rock Hard) |
Borax | Our Borax crystal covered the bottom half of the pipe cleaner star. - Cube | No sizing | Hard |
Sugar | Our sugar crystal didn't form into a shape | No sizing | Soft |
Salt | Our salt crystal didn't form into a shape | No sizing | Soft |
